After the huge success of the Demon Slayer movie it is only natural to think of how the original season was. In the case of Demon Slayer, it was a series I thoroughly enjoyed. Animation is top notch and the story told captivating with charming characters to boot. At its heart it is a shounen show so whilst I consider this one a classic I also know that it won't appeal to all due to its shounen based roots. Review: Demon Slayer otherwise known as Kimetsu no Yaiba is a shounen, action series featuring demons. The anime also gave rise to the hugely successful Demon Slayer: Infinity Train movie which holds the record for the highest ever grossing anime film as well as the top grossing film for 2020 which is a first for a...
Review: Meikyuu Black Company is a fantasy comedy/isekai series which was first released in the summer 2021. The story for Meikyuu Black Company revolves around Kinji Ninomiya who is a NEET and has seemingly never worked a day in his life. Unlike other shows however, Kinji, through a series of side hustles and smart investments, has made it financially and is living the high life. His easy life of luxury is suddenly cut short however when he is mysteriously transported to a new world and is forced to work for the Raiza'ha Corporation, a corporation that is run like a black company! A NEET with a difference! What one should be clear from the get go is Meikyuu Black Company is an isekai with a difference. Our main man Kinji does not...
Review Higurashi: When They Cry – SOTSU otherwise known as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu is a supernatural, horror/thriller series which was first released in the summer 2021. When They Cry – SOTSU is the fifth and latest season in the Higurashi franchise and is a direct sequel to Gou. If you wish to know how good the previous seasons were check the links below: Season one: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Season two: Kai season Season three: Rei season Season four: Gou season I will say this straight up, this season has no mystery elements whatsoever. If you watched Higurashi for its mystery, suspense or clever storytelling then do NOT watch this. It has none of that. Sotsu continues where Gou left so the primary story focus of this show...
Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime season two part two is an action/fantasy isekai series that aired in the summer 2021 season. Unsurprisingly events in this second part follow straight from part one so naturally this season is not newcomer friendly. You got to watch the previous seasons otherwise you won’t understand a thing that is going on. Saying that, due to the nature of its start, picking up this second part is easy if you haven’t seen part one in a while as there is a lot of recaps to get viewers up to speed. As always, I got reviews for the previous seasons on the links below: Season one: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season two: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (part 1) I said the first part of...
Review: Remake our Life! Also known as Bokutachi no Remake is a time-travel romantic/drama anime series that was first released in the summer 2021. The premise of the show centres on Kyouya Hashiba; a 28-year-old office worker who is major fan of the “Platinum Generation” which is a group of highly talented artists. His admiration for the group is tainted with a hint of envy and it is this envy that makes him regret his decision in pursuing a traditional university degree instead of following his true dreams of attending art school and then working in the gaming industry. Vowing to make his dream a reality, he decides to quit his job and pursue a career in video games. His entry into the video game industry is a short-lived affair...
Strictly speaking Night Head Genesis is not a prequel as Night Head 2041 seems closer to a reboot than a sequel. At least from that is the vibe I get from seeing the beginning of Night Head 2041. As for the show itself, Night Head Genesis manages to combine sci-fi with the supernatural and is generally an intriguing tale that is hampered by its slow pacing. Don't worry though this series is not required viewing in understanding Night Head 2041 so you can give this a miss and jump straight into the new season if that is more your thing. Review: Night Head Genesis is a supernatural/psychological, mystery, drama series. The original season, Night Head Genesis was first released in the summer of 2006 while the second adaptation titled...
When They Cry - Gou is an anime of two halves. The first 13 episodes of this show are devoted to the retelling of events from the original When They Cry series whilst the final 11 episodes take the franchise into new directions! Beware that this season has no conclusion and if you wish to see the ending then you will need to view the Sotsu sequel. As always, this is not for the faint of heart plus I will add this will not be enjoyable for those who enjoy mystery series. Review: Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou also known as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou is a supernatural, horror/thriller series which first aired in the autumn of 2020. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou is the fourth season in the franchise with the currently running Sotsu...
Review: Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story Season 2 - The Eve of Awakening otherwise known as Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica Gaiden (TV) 2nd Season - Kakusei Zenya is a dark magical girl series that was released in the summer 2021 season. As the name implies, this is the second season of the original Magia Record season which aired in the winter 2020. A third and final season for Magia Record is due for release in the winter 2022 season. If you wish to know how the first season was like I suggest you check the link below for my season one review: Season one: Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story From the get go I can say that Magia Records season two is not suitable for newcomers as the events...
Review: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S also known as Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S is a slice-of-life, comedy, fantasy series that originally aired in the summer 2021 season. Kobayashi Dragon Maid S is the sequel to the first Kobayashi season which came out in the winter season of 2017. If you want to learn more about how that season was please check the link below for my season one review: Season one: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Like the first season, Dragon Maid S start things with a bang as we are introduced to Ilulu; a powerful dragon that is hell bent on destruction. It is action packed, it is dramatic and what’s more, we get to see all of our fav characters in this arc! Beyond the action and angst there is a...
Review: The Case Study of Vanitas also known as Vanitas no Karte is a supernatural/steampunk vampire series that first aired in the summer 2021 season. The series will consist of two cours with the second half due to be released in January 2022 so from the get go one should be aware this season will not have a complete conclusion. The backdrop to the Vanitas story centres around the vampire curse of the blue moon. It is said that a vampire named Vanitas was born during the blue moon and since most vampires are born under the crimson moon, he felt lonely and swore vengeance against the vampire race using the grimoire “the book of Vanitas” to strike them down. It is at this point where we are introduced to the main character Noe...
Review: Peach Boy Riverside is a fantasy/action series that was released in the summer 2021 season. One of the more controversial aspects of this series is the order in which the episodes were broadcast. Unlike most shows, Peach Boy Riverside was not released in chronological order. Instead, the director opted to release in a non-linear format. Now changing the order is not necessarily a bad thing as it can work in mystery/episodic type series however in the case of Peach Boy Riverside I felt it was a bad move as the anime depended more in telling its story in a linear fashion. If you do decide to watch Peach Boy in its original broadcast order, please beware there will be scenes that end midway only to concluded two or three episodes...
Review: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X otherwise known as Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta... X is a shoujo comedy/harem fantasy series. This is the sequel to the first season which aired in the spring season of 2020. If you wish to read the review for the first season, please click on the link below: Season one: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! The second season starts where the first ended, because of this I would recommend watching the first season if you haven’t already done so. It is not like the plot is exactly a difficult one to follow but considering this is primarily a character driven series skipping the first season means you will be...
In this prequel watch I will delve into All Routes Lead to Doom! It is a comedy series which adds an interesting twist to the harem/reverse harem genre. Unlike most harem shows this should appeal to both sexes. I certainly got a kick out of it! Stay tuned though as I plan on posting a review on the sequel tomorrow! Review: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Otherwise known as Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta (I dare you to read that out loud XD) is a shoujo comedy/harem fantasy series. The first season originally broadcast in the spring season of 2020 whilst the second is currently airing in the summer season of 2021. All Routes Lead to Doom is a series which stars an...
Review: To Your Eternity also known as Fumetsu no Anata e is a supernatural/adventure drama series that was first released in the spring 2021 season and consisted of 20 episodes. The premise to this story is a rather unusual one. The main character begins life as an orb which is cast into Earth. The orb is capable of changing forms when it makes contact with objects or living beings. The first form it takes is that of a rock when it lands on the ground. Over time as the temperature rises moss forms around the rock and the orb transforms into this moss. After a period of time a wolf dies on the moss which results in the orb taking the shape of the wolf. It is at this point when the orb develops a sense of consciousness and awareness...
This is the third season of the Higurashi franchise and unlike the previous two seasons it takes on a much light hearted tone. There are more fan service moments and general comedy that is not often seen in the main story so is really something that caters to the fans. Sandwiched between the filler though is a more serious story that centres on Rika and her making a key decision. All in all it is a fairly enjoyable ride but nothing too groundbreaking. Review: Whey They Cry: Rei also known as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei is a supernatural/thriller with a dose of comedy. The third Rei season was an Original Video Animation (OVA) that was released between 25th February 2009 and 21st August 2009. There are two sequels to Rei which are...
In the this part of the prequal series I will look at the sequel of the first Evangelion Rebuild movie; Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance. Released in 2009 I would argue this was the strongest film in the entire Rebuild series. The balance in the story and action was the best out of the four movies plus the twists to the original Neon Genesis Evangelion storyline made this an interesting watch for newcomers and veterans alike. Despite what my review says (which was written when I had not seen Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo) the preview can be completely ignored. Review: Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance also titled Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Ha is a psychological mecha film that was first released in cinemas on 27th...
In this prequel watch we take a look at the second season of Higurashi series which answers a lot of the questions raised in the first season. In many ways I found Kai to be the true end and felt the subsequent seasons were, in essence, money grabs as entertaining as they were. If you want to get the complete story to Higurashi story then you need to watch this along with season one. Review: Whey They Cry: Kai otherwise known as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai is a supernatural/thriller which was released in the summer of 2007. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai is the second season in the mainline story with the Rei, Gou and Sotsu seasons being the sequels. Season one: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Seeing as Kai is the sequel to the...
In the this part of the prequal series I will look into the first Evangelion Rebuild movie; Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone. Released in 2007 this was supposed to be a reboot of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion. The production values in this series was outstanding and even the original movie is stunning to this day. Whilst the first two movies broadly followed the original anime series the last two take the series into entirely new territory. Review: Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone also known as Evangelion Shin Gekijouban is a psychological mecha film that had its original theatrical release on 1st September 2007. You are Are (Not) Alone is the first film in the Evangelion Rebuild tetralogy movie series with the others...
In the fifth part of the prequal series I will delve into the Higurashi franchise. I will start with the original that started it all, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni that came out all the way back in 2006. The series certainly left a mark with its style of horror and gore but behind the mindless violence was an interesting tale of mystery that kept us questioning right until the shows end. It is certainly a show worth watching although it is not for the faint of heart or kids. Review: When They Cry more commonly known as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a mystery/horror, thriller, supernatural series which premiered in the spring of 2006. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is the opening season of the Higurashi franchise with the anime later spawning...
In the fourth part of the prequal series I will look into Magia Records which is a side story to the renowned Madoka series. While not quite as good as its main story counterpart Magia Records was still a fairly enjoyable watch. What is more this series has the potential for its second season to eclipse the opener as most of the character exposition and backstory has been covered. Review: Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story also known as Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica Gaiden is a dark magical girl series that was originally broadcast in the Winter of 2020. A second season of Magia Record is due for release in the Summer of 2021 season whilst a third and final season is provisionally due to air in the Winter...
