Western Countries Banning Anime - Is it porn?

Ad: Buy Girls Und Panzer Merch from Play Asia!
What do they want to do?? Have all the people there watch Dora the Explorer and Dragon tales?! I mean... I just don't get their logic... If they really want to prevent people from watching explicit shows they should erase the existence of television and internet on their area. AND anime has minimal effects (if there is any... duh!) compared to western movies, which are extremely explicit and crappy in nature... Anime has sense, and at the very least you could learn something from it compared to some if not many western movies... sorry if I offended anyone!

I have read pretty much all the posts in this thread and I cant stop asking myself, what on earth makes ppl think that anime is all about hentai. Sure hentais exist, but that is not the main form of animes, is it? There is no hentai on TV, you can get it from internet, sure..... but how much porn is on internet? If they are to ban hentais, how come they are not concerned about pornography in general?

I still somehow dont get it, why ppl think anime promotes sex, because it doesnt in my opinion....

People who don't know anime see it in the extremes: either it's all for children (Pokemon, etc) or it's all for adults (hentai). And google image searches aren't helping ... often hentai images showed up before they allowed you to screen results.

Plus I think ecchi, which can sometimes be 'distasteful' in that it is blatantly obvious and not blended with the show, can also give the wrong impression. I had a teacher once ask me how I could watch anime, because from the discussions she'd heard from the male students in her computer programming class, she found anime to be very sexist.

I have a Canadian station with my digital service and from what I've seen from some of the teen shows, most of the anime we watch is quite harmless

My gosh....I forgot the name of the popular teenage show...it's still going on too.. I used to watch it religiously but then lost touch when my own school work was getting to be rough..

Well...just like someone said, when you don't understand something, you knock it. I had a similar conversation with this guy at my job. He claimed all anime to be violent and sexually explicit. I asked him if he's ever seen Kirby, Hamtaro or, Digimon, Transformers or Pokemon?

Who hasn't seen transformers? And anime is immensely popular and has been for years. I've seen worse stuff on channels like Showcase and other channels that are 10 times worse and easier for a child to find.
R.O.D the TV has just started on G4 Canada... and it isn't totally explicit...just a bit.. sometimes but its rated 18+ so yeah.

They already censor most anime here and air them pretty late, what more do they want? I think the anime here is not explicit enough, thats why I hate T.V, I just download my anime in the end.

Scrolling through the posts i noticed that most of u peeps are confused with the term "ecchi" and "hentai". "ecchi" is the letter "H" in the word "Hentai". The japanese use "ecchi" as a shorter word for "hentai". anyways, if the government really bans "anime" then they really should ban all animation. since "anime" means animation. well im canadian too and they can't stop me from dling it. too bad so sad.

That's how the Japanese use it, but it's not how the non-Japanese fandom uses it. There is a difference in the terms outside of Japan. The ecchi thread here, for example, contains no hentai.

And if you all read the posts you'd have read this one and know that the government isn't banning anime anytime soon.

And if they do, there's always Chinatown! (and the internet)

They do censor it pretty well. Gundam Seed aired at ten, and yet they still edited out the Lacus panty-shot, not to mention most of the Flay stuff.

what is so desirable about explicit anime? I find the pantsu scenes and "females squeezing other females breasts" pretty annoying.

As a traditional animator, and student taking Computer Animation, I see anime as artistic. Just as a painter can paint a nude person and call it "ART", anime to me is not vulgar. Each series, be it ecchi, hentai, chibi, and many others is created for a target audience. I don't see the point for a government to regulate anime as one form. There are laws already in the books for proper distribution and there are already ratings. I've seen in stores like walmart where they put a teen rated anime in the childrens section. To the government they are too lazy to look at the ratings on the box, and the fine print on most anime dvds.

As an industry I see the broadcasting of anime on g4 as well. I don't mind it. They do show the parental warnings and throughout the showing of each segment after the commercials they do repeat the ratings and parental warnings. It's the parents who are too lazy to use the parental controls on most TVs made since 2001 and their own judgement about allowing the kids to view anime that they find distasteful.

As an asian-american artist, I have friends who like ecchi, but hate hentai. I see test audience members who like one form of art over another. I know otaku who are loyal to only one artist no matter what studio he may contract to. I myself am loyal to specific studios who inspired me throughout my life. But that doesn't make any of us turn against those who prefer those forms of art. For government to regulate anime would be like going to a museam and only having abstract surrealism in nothing else. And that would leave the 86% of the population with nothing. It will taint the creative pool of artists, since they won't get the chance to experience what others are doing.

So I admit my bias since I am a student of the anime industry. But I am also a fan, an artist, and a citizen... For governments to regulate anime. It would make anime studios become underground. Like many e-zines which are rooted in that very form. Anime shouldn't be regulated any farther then it is. For it already has to go through RATINGs, then it has to be censored for broadcasts if it has foul language or suggestive nudity. There is also many more aspects that go into play before production ever starts, and many other issues before public distro. Anime is already regulated more strictly then plain LIVE-ACTION series and movies. If this keeps up, I know he anime studios WILL start to get legal reps to issue filings of dicrimination. I know my university which does anime shorts for our college station and online streams has already discussed that prospect. For it isn't just Canada, it is also the US. Most asian countries are against further regulation. Also many Euro countries are not for further regulation. But, as regulations go, it whomever has enough money pouring into the regulatory commity, who will get to make the final say. As history has shown, it's all about money, not votes.

You are aware that even that won't save you right? It's quite possible to end up with porn in the image search even with the "safe" setting enabled. I'm quite serious, turn it on and search for 'anime' that's the only one I'm quite certain works but there are many others. My apologies for not being one of the types who makes a list of everything. ;p

edit: grammatical error, it's nearly four am leave me alone...

If you think about it from a marketing point of view, the government banning or trying to force people to watch it at a later hour in the night only makes it more interesting for those who are not so 'educated' in the 'fandom', thereby making them want to check it out for themselves and maybe most of them will get hooked.

I didn't mean that Warita. I meant that they censor the killing, swear words and content that creates a mood for the story. Imagine, if you were wacthing this love scene and it seems adult like, and they censor the couple, wouldnt you be pissed off? I mean, we are adults, well some of us. It would be annoying to see that happen. Even in movies, you wouldnt want them censoring the love scenes, am I right?

ps. What anime has females doing stuff to eachother???? They wouldnt even air that on T.V lol, that would be hentai or ecchi right? Most ecchi shows doesn't have that stuff and I don't watch that kind of stuff either, or not anymore

Haruhi and Mikuru come to mind .... but that show is probably too out there to make US television.

And they do censor out a lot of the little things. I remember the first time I watched my Gundam Wing DVDs .... there were a lot of subtle differences, like blood. And sometimes scenes were cut a few seconds short to censor language. It sounds like they did a number on Gundam Seed, but I haven't watched all the subbed eps yet. But apparently, Kira and Flay are together??!?!
tongue.gif

But is it wrong what they do? I think censoring is fine in some cases. But the infamous editing out of the guns in Yu-Gi-Oh was so obvious ... "FREEZE! (points finger)"
rolleyes.gif
If they can blend it in, why not? The television audience is generally not 'hardcore' fans who are going to care.

well, if it is only foul language and blood, I think scensoring is stupid. Especially when they air it at night...

What animes have females kneading some other females tits?..... actually quite a few. There was one scene in Haruhi Suzumiya like that, than in that strange anime about the ship crew that consisted only of females (forgot the name, didnt like it, so dropped it after 3 eps) and in Chocotto sister.... ok, these are the first 3 that pop in my mind, but I have seen this many times before.... and I dont like it.

As for intensive love scenes in a movie.....well, I dont like it. But of course that is a matter of taste, those who like it shall have their fun, but usually I would temporarily switch to another channel. I dont mind to see the couple kissing, then fall into the bed and than the camera fades away...... but lately you have to watch them reach orgasm like for 3 minutes or more. GRRRRR, annoying.

Indeed, there is a sex scene between Kira and Flay only in the Gundam SEED special edition movie's. It's shown in the first one thats only in japanese and has yet to be released in North America. Also, I hated it when they censored the part where Lacus changes in front of Kira on the Archangle after Kira was gonna take her off the ship and return her to Athrun in the early episodes. YOu actually got to see her in her undies which was very hot

Damn, I should make that my wallpaper

this is why, if this ever does happen, all otakus get their cosplays ready, and go out in the skimpiest cosplays ever just to spite them =p

LOL they've already released the trilogy set in North America for about a week or two now.

As for your second statement... that just sounded akward.

What is why? How does this relate to anything being discussed. Please be a bit more specific at what you are referring to. The topic? or the current discussion?

LOL I wonder if Kimi ga Nozomu Eien was ever aired, I wonder how they're going to edit that series XD. That series has so many sex scenes and its not counted as hentai because they don't explicitly show it XD. That would be probably one of the many such series that would be ruined if ever aired on tv in North America.

at least the US is too dumb to think of anime as anything other then a cartoon

Actually if I remember Bush at one time wanted also to ban anime but its going against our god-given free will to watch what we wanna' watch therefor it bassically didn't stand a chance in legislature. Probbly the same thing is going to happen in Canada, or there will be a huge amount of piracy going on...
